NODOSIS ( sodium bicarbonate tablet) is used to treat acidosis in kidney disease , also used as a alkalising agent in many conditions where acidosis occurs. Lets say conditions like in advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) where CPR (cardiopulmanory resuscitation) is done, and in the treatment of certain intoxications for instance , methyl alcohol , salicylates to decrease renal
Reabsorption of the drug .
Each coated film tablet contains coated sodium bicarbonate 500 mg, nodosis DS contains film coated sodium bicarbonate IP 1000 mg. Another one, NODOSIS suspension is flavoured syrup base 1000 mg in 15 ml syrup and enteric carted sodium bicarbonate 500 mg in the form of NODOSIS-GST.
How does it help treat acidosis conditions?
NODOSIS therapy increases plasma bicarbonate by use of supplied sodium Bicarbonate, firstly, by buffering excess hydrogen ion concentration. Secondly, by raising blood pH and reverses the clinical consequences of acidosis. Generally, plasma concentration is regulated by the renal system or kidney through the action of acidification of the urine. Additionally, by alkalinization of the urine when there is an excess and bicarbonate anion is considered “labile at a proper concentration of hydrogen ion (H+) , it may get oxidised to carbonic acid (H2CO3) and to make it a volatile form, carbon dioxide (CO2) is excreted by the lungs.
Normal ratio of 1:20 (carbonic acid: bicarbonate) is present in the extra cellular fluid. In a healthy adult with proper and normal kidney function, practically all the glomerular filtered bicarbonate ion gets reabsorbed an less than 1% is excreted in the urine.
